What the council asks for (7)
- Apply online or on the printable form, with a sketch plan of the scaffold's location; renewals use the same form with the current permit number.
- The fee must come with the application, which isn't processed without it.
- Evidence of public liability insurance for at least £5 million, and the council must be indemnified against claims.
- A building control surveyor visits the site before the licence is agreed.
- Keep 1.5m of clear footway in busy areas (1.2m may be accepted elsewhere) and 2.6m clear headroom over the footway.
- Light the structure at night with red lamps at each end and every 6 metres, and show 'DANGER — MEN WORKING ABOVE' signs and the licensee's contact details.
- Record the condition of the footway before erecting: you'll be charged for any damage.
